The office of the President of Gambia has issued a directive that with effect from 31st December, 2015, all female staff in the government ministries, Departments and agencies are banned from exposing their head during official working hours and that female staff are urged to use head tie and neatly wrap their hair, the Freedom Newspaper can report. has banned its female employees from leaving their hair uncovered at work. According to a leaked memo quoted by a private newspaper, “women should use a head tie and neatly wrap their hair.”

Also, last month, the President of Gambia Yahya Jammeh declared the country an Islamic Republic.
